THE demonstrator at the last Whitefield District Flower Club meeting on May 16 was David Ryland, from Cumbria.

His first design was created in a low bowl with fatsia leaves, Scots pine, oak leaves, strelitzia leaves and papyrus, then three large alliums and Singapore orchids were placed with skeletonised tenax leaves and some moss.

The next design was in a flat dish surrounded by birch twigs, asparagus fern, ostrich feathers and white sisal. Cream gerberas, feverfew and white roses, with two dried swan-neck gourds filling the centre.

A large glass flute filled with gel was next and David arranged into this kangaroo paws, palm leaves, asparagus fern, and green amaranthus trailing over the edge. In the centre he put duck feathers, yellow celosia and green anthuriums.

A tall wooden container with a piece of driftwood laid across it was next, and into this was placed flowering viburnum branches positioned horizontally, then variegated horse radish, aconitum and sprays of white moth orchids in the centre.

A wrought iron stand came next, adorned with branches of Scots pine, bells of Ireland, variegated lavatera and aspidestra leaves with pale green celosia and bright yellow gerberas. Two large wasps made from skeletonised leaves were perched on the side.

Finally, a large urn containing a tall piece of dried contorted hazel was surrounded by monstera leaves, aspargus fern, Scots pine, palm leaves and larch branches. Solomons seal, red rhododendron flowers and exotic red lilies made this a stunning centre-piece. At the base of this David put a traditional triangle display of aconitum, roses, Solomons seal, and greenery. His wonderful displays and great wit gave us a lovely evening.

Mrs Peggy Heald gave the vote-of-thanks.
