I REFER to the ongoing correspondence regarding the campaign for the installation of a speed camera on Bolton Road, Radcliffe.

As I'm sure you are aware, Bury Council is fully supportive of this application which has further endorsements from local councillors and Ivan Lewis MP.

The council wrote to the Greater Manchester Casualty Reduction Partnership (Drivesafe) in March 2005 to request that they submit an application to the Department for Transport for the establishment of a speed camera site on Bolton Road.

The Partnership has assessed the data provided by the council against the Department for Transports criteria for new sites. While most of the criteria are met, there remains a potential problem regarding the interpretation of traffic speed data.

The Partnership have since confirmed that it intends submitting the application to the Department for Transport. It feels optimistic that there is a possibility that exceptional approval could still be given in this case despite the problem regarding the speed criteria.

I can assure you that the council continues to press for a positive outcome in this case.
