VOLUNTEERS from Burnley have been praised for their efforts to break the record of most trees planted in one hour.
Running alongside the BBC’s Breathing Places campaign and Burnley Council staff, 789 shoots were planted at Rowley and the Delph in Underlay Street.
But volunteers from the Offshoots project and the ‘Forest of Burnley’ failed to break the record, although participents are keen to stress the importance of creating green spaces.
Jenny Fern, a member of the organising committee, said: “Whilst we might not have broken the world record, we have breathed new life into Burnley by planting nearly 800 trees.
“This is a fantastic achievement, well done everyone.”
The ‘Forest of Burnley’ was created in 1997 to tackle Burnley’s below-average woodland coverage, aiming to create a further 500 hectares of new woodland.
Since then more than 1.1million trees have been planted across 430 hectares, also creating new paths, rides, wild flowers beds and wetland.
