Muslim Global Relief has launched an emergency appeal for Haiti after a major earthquake struck the country.

Up to 50,000 people are feared dead, with 3 million been left homeless and is the worst earthquake in Haiti for 200 years.

The earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, struck 15km southwest of the capital Port-au-Prince just before 5pm local time on Tuesday 12th January 2010.

At the moment it is still too early to know the full extent of the damage, but all international NGOs are expecting very high loss of life as the number of people living in the earthquake region was around 3.5 million, with reports of widespread destruction of both commercial and private buildings, and major damage to the infrastructure of Haiti.

Reports of food and water supplies lasting only a few days – urgent AID is immediately needed.

MGR requires; To supply water, food, medicines and shelter materials to the worst affected areas.

MGR is a humanitarian organisation, and our duty is to help people throughout the world – wherever there is need. - Substantial humanitarian assistance will be required, please donate generously.
