AN East Lancashire headmaster has vowed his school will do better in light of last year’s poor GCSE results.

Martin Burgess, head of Shuttleworth College, Padiham, said the school was working hard to improve its scores.

He insisted that the students who knuckled down did well and left with good results.

Mr Burgess, who is in charge of the Burnley Road school, said: "Of course these results are a disappointment to us and we can't be satisfied with them.

“We know there is still a way to go and we will continue to work hard to build on the improvements we have already made in areas such as behaviour, attendance and improving learning skills.

“However, I will insist that there were a significant number of students who by dint of sheer hard work produced results which have exceeded expectations and shown just what can be possible.

“Those students who wished to do well did do well"
