A GRIEVING husband has told of his disgust after ornaments were stolen from his wife's grave.

Martin Townsend, 47, of Bute Road, Shadsworth, Blackburn, has been left devastated at the theft from Lynne's memorial at Pleasington Cemetery.

Police have launched an investigation into the 'cruel crime', while the borough council said it was an isolated incident.

Since the 58-year-old mum of four died from cancer last July, Mr Townsend has visited her grave most days.

But following an enforced break from his vigil because of the cold snap, Mr Townsend was shocked to discover that thieves had desecrated her plot on Saturday.

He said: “I normally go every day, but when the snow was down I couldn't get up there.

“They have taken two heart-shaped stones, two little angels and a book which has a specific verse for Lynne.

“It was terrible, just awful. I was devastated. My family is disgusted.

“It's just the fact that somebody could actually do that.

“People need to be aware because it really is very upsetting.

“Lynne was a bubbly, outgoing person. She would do anything for anybody.”

Mr Townsend's stepdaughter, Nicola Beckingham, 35, said they were still struggling to cope with her mum's loss.

She said: “She was only diagnosed with cancer eight weeks before she died, so we're still in shock about that and then this happens.”

Police visited the cemetery to inspect the scene, speak to other families and analyse CCTV footage.

Police Constable Ken Mansfield said: “This is an extremely cruel and callous crime.

“We urge anybody with any information about who is responsible for this, or anybody who comes across these items or who is offered them for sale, to contact the police.”

Coun Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration and environment at the borough council which manages the cemetery, said it appeared to be an isolated incident.

He said: "We were saddened to hear about this theft."
