British Telecom has written to chief planning officers inviting them to consider the option for local communities to adopt the red telephone kiosks at £1 each.
BT accepts that there is a huge fondness for the traditional red kiosk and that it is seen by many as a British cultural design icon.
Many people want the red kiosks to remain wherever possible. However, the majority of these telephone kiosks simply are not used very much, if at all.
BT are, therefore, offering local communities the opportunity to adopt the red kiosk within their area.
The kiosk in the hamlet of Hurstwood has been identified as one not being used sufficiently to continue the public telephone service and therefore the kiosk is available for adoption by the local town, parish or community council.
