A BRAVE little boy who was left partially paralysed when a large gate hit him on the head has made “amazing” progress since the accident, according to his mum.

Callum Taylor fractured his skull when he was struck by the gate while retrieving a football near Astley House, Albert Street, Burnley.

Since the accident the football mad ten-year-old has been left without the use of his left arm and has also developed epilepsy.

But almost a year on, his mum Lynsey Burdett, said she was “very proud” of the way he had responded to his injuries.

Immediately after the incident Callum was treated in the specialist trauma unit at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury.

At first his speech was slurred and he could not move the left side of his body.

But the avid Manchester United fan and former goalkeeper of Leyland Road Boys is now able to walk around freely.

And Lynsey, 28, of Sandhurst Street, Burnley, is still hopeful he will regain the use of his left arm and hand.

She said: “He can’t play football anymore.

“But he watches the other children, which makes him a bit frustrated at times.

“He has his ups and his downs.

“But I’m very proud of the way he’s handled everything.” Callum, who attends Brunshaw Primary School, in Burnley, is still having intense physio sessions and occupational therapy sessions.

Although he attends school as normal he cannot take part in physical education lessons and has one-to-one teaching.

Lynsey said: “I’m very pleased with the progress he’s made in the last year. I’m amazed he survived, “I honestly thought he was a goner after it happened and was astonished he pulled through it all. There has been some improvement in his arm and we’re all hoping the movement will come back again.”
