HOMEOWNERS who have been affected by flooding in the past may receive funds from the Government to combat future floods.

As part of a new £5m government scheme, some Rossendale homes will get a free home flood survey and a grant towards the cost of protection measures.

To be eligible, the property must have been flooded by a river or stream, at above ground floor level, at least once since the beginning of 1998.

The property must also be in an area which is at risk of being flooded at least one year in every 20. Flooding resulting from blocked or damaged sewers is not eligible.

If past flooding was caused by surface water or ground water, the property is only eligible if it has been flooded twice since the start of 1988.

Properties that cannot be defended through a viable community flood defence scheme will be given priority.
