BURNLEY MP Kitty Ussher has urged bosses at an aerospace firm to give workers the chance to save their jobs.

The future appears bleak for staff at GKN Aerospace, with around 60 jobs at the company’s Dunnockshaw plant expected to go when the factory closes at the end of the year.

But Mrs Ussher has met with GKN chief executive Marcus Bryson in an attempt to get him to think again.

The MP says the Burnley arm of the firm was profitable in 2008 and there has been unease at the way workers were informed of the lay-offs.

She said: “I am glad the management have agreed to look again at what information they are able to provide to their workforce and I have agreed to keep in touch with Mr Bryson over the coming weeks and months as the situation develops.

“I promise to do everything in my power to ensure that the loyal and hard-working staff at GKN are treated fairly.”

The MP says under laws introduced by the Goverment, the workforce has a legal right to put forward a counter-proposal to management, based on shared financial information in order to preserve jobs.

Plans were unveiled last week for a phased shutdown of the Manchester Road site, on the outskirts of Burnley.

Thirty positions are expected to go before the end of July and another 26 in September.
