SHOPS, cafes, and pubs will soon be making their toilets available for the public, free of charge.
The ‘Community Toilet Scheme’ has been launched in Bacup to provide more loos for public use without an obligation to make a purchase.
Businesses who sign up to the initiative will receive a small fee from the council in return for their hospitiality.
Coun Peter Steen said: “I am pleased that the council is doing something positive to improve the availability of toilet facilities in Bacup.
“The new community loo scheme is an innovative solution to the problem and is potentially a better solution than the council providing public conveniences.”
So far, the Maden Centre on Rochdale Road, Carolyn’s Café on St. James’ Square and Bacup Market have signed up.
Participating premises will display a distinctive sticker in their window to show that they are taking part in the scheme.
Rossendale’s Community Loo project is similar to schemes operating elsewhere in the country.
