PUPILS put on their dancing shoes and took to Blackpool Tower’s famous ballroom dancefloor yesterday.

After weeks rehearsing during physical education lessons, year one pupils from Westholme Lower School, in Blackburn, travelled to Blackpool for their very own ballroom blitz.

And the children enjoyed a well-earned high tea after their performance to the tower’s famous Wurlitzer organ.

They group was dressed to impress with the boys sporting red cummerbunds and bow ties, and the girls wearing glitzy ballroom dresses.

Headteacher Debbie Northin said the pupils would remember the experience forever.

She said: “The children have been fantastic. It has been very exciting for them.

“It’s important for them to have different experiences so they will grow up leading happy and balanced lives.”

She said the pupils have been getting dance tips from Strictly Come Dancing. “The children love the show and a lot of them have been watching it,” she said.

“They have been practicing very hard and all their work has paid off. They were fabulous.”

The children performed a cha cha to I Could Have Danced All Night in front of visitors and other dancers in the ballroom.

They finished the performance by singing Que Sera Sera to the crowd.

Geoff Sage, general manager at the tower, said the children were an inspiration.

“It is important for them to learn ballroom dancing, just as it is important for them to learn modern dancing.

“It’s great for them to be able to perform on the dancefloor and I hope they carry on.”

Pupil Adam Barnett, five, said he wanted to keep the ballroom tradition alive.

He said: “I have had a good time and would love to come back.”
