TV star Jody Latham could be facing an uphill battle in his bid to reopen a village pub - and bring a host of star names to Barrowford.

The Burnley-born Shameless actor and property developer Simon Graham are the driving forces behind plans to regenerate the former Victoria Hotel, on Gisburn Road.

Plans have been unveiled to open the venue until 4am from Thursdays to Sundays and guests from hot new act Reverend and the Makers, Happy Mondays dancer Bez, The Zutons and The Charlatans could headline there soon.

Speaking last month, Jody said: “We’re aiming to bring a little bit of the city to Barrowford. We’re really fortunate because it is a vibrant village, with some great boutiques, shops and pubs and we’d like to contribute to that.”

But 36 residents, mainly living in Gisburn Road and nearby Holmefield Gardens, have protested strongly about the reopening of the hostelry.

And Lancashire Police licensing officer Pc Chris Storey has also lodged a formal objection on behalf of the constabulary, claiming the plans would only add to the potential for late night disturbance in Barrowford.

The pub has been closed for some time and neighbours have petitioned Pendle council’s licensing committee saying it should stay that way.

Peter Gray, of Gisburn Road, says in a letter: “Due to the proposed late operation of the premises I feel that the nuisance from customers, taxis and litter will occur on a regular basis and that my quality of life will suffer as a consequence.”

Juliette Bate, of Holmefield Gardens, adds: “Since it’s closure for renovation, late nights near our home have been quieter.

“I cannot bear the thought of this becoming a ‘fun pub, it would make the village and our lives suffer.”

Tony Loftus, of Garnett Street, added: “We are quite happy (with) the way it is. If they like the city so much then the M65 is just outside the Victoria Hotel and I would be very happy to show them the way.”

Punch Taverns is the brewery backing the application, which will be decided by the licensing committee on December 1 at Nelson Town Hall.
