A 45-YEAR-OLD man who reversed a car “a matter of metres” across a supermarket car park found himself heading to the Crown Court for sentence.

Blackburn magistrates heard that Derek Isherwood had been given the keys to his sister’s car so that he and her disabled son could go and get a cigarette.

But, after having a smoke, Isherwood decided to reverse out of the disabled parking spot to turn the car round and, in the process, hit another car.

As a result he was charged with unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle, driving without insurance, and other than in accordance with a licence. And the bench committed him to Preston Crown Court for sentence after hearing he was in breach of a suspended prison sentence for burglary.

Isherwood, of Brodick Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to all three offences.

Michael Blacklidge, defending, said having been given the keys by his sister, Isherwood had decided to turn the car round so it was facing the right way.

“He has driven the car on a supermarket car park and he can only have driven it a matter of metres,” said Mr Blacklidge. “It’s not the first bump on a supermarket car park and the damage to the other car was minimal.”
