A PASSING motorist is being sought by police hunting three men for a 'callous' town centre attack.

A 20-year-old man was left needing 12 stitches to a head wound following the attack in Higher Audley, Blackburn in the early hours of Friday morning.

Police believe the victim may have tried to flag down a dark coloured saloon car moments after he was set upon by three men armed with an 18-inch metal bar.

Officers would now like to trace the driver in the hope that he may have vital evidence to help them catch the trio.

Detective Sergeant Warren Atkinson, of Blackburn CID, said: "This was a callous and sustained attack.

"I would urge anyone with any information about this attack to come forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Blackburn CID on 01254 51212 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
