A SUMMER crackdown on metal theft has been hailed a success.

Following a spate of lead thefts in Blackburn town centre, police diverted one officer on to night time patrols in areas that had been targeted by thieves throughout August.

The ground-based officer was able to direct colleagues in the police helicopter when he saw people stealing lead from roofs.

The team were then able to make several arrests, including three teenagers caught on the roof of the magistrates’ court and two people on Blackburn College premises.

Sgt Alan Clayton, of Blackburn police, said: "Thefts of lead have been increasing due to the rise in price of the metal.

“This was a successful operation that allowed ground staff to co-ordinate moves with those in the helicopter to make series of arrests."
