A SHRINE to a man killed in a car crash will be moved after action by council bosses.

Tributes to Derek Maxwell have been left close to Haslingden’s war memorial in recent weeks after the 36-year-old died in a smash in Scotland.

Mr Maxwell, of Hillside Road, was originally from Glasgow but had lived in East Lancashire for many years.

Dozens of flowers and messages will now be moved after Rossendale Council stepped in.

Coun Peter Steen, cabinet member for environment, said: “We are aware that the war memorial in Haslingden has been used to commemorate the life of a recently departed resident.

“The council has worked hard to respond to this issue in a sensitive way to all concerned and we are pleased that the person responsible for the shrine has agreed to move it into the nearby park.”

Maxwell died after the car he was travelling in crashed on the A87 near Kyleakin.

A man has since appeared in court after police said the vehicle was believed to have been stolen from Haslingden.
