A NEW £5million project to improve the railway line between Blackburn and Clitheroe has been announced.

And passengers are being warned that at as result no services will run between the two towns from November 8 to November 26.

Bus services will be put on as an alternative.

The aim of the Network Rail scheme is to improve the speed limits on sections of the line.

Ssome areas of the track are currently restricted to a 20mph speed limit.

Following the completion of the work trains will be able to travel at the normal line speed of up to 45mph.

Bosses at the firm said the current track through Whalley and Clitheroe would be replaced by type of track that provides a smoother, quieter ride.

This track will be laid on 16,000 new concrete or steel sleepers and in total 11,661 yards of track will be completely revamped.

Peter Strachan, Network Rail’s route director said the work would cause disruptions to regular passengers.

He said: “I would like to thank people for their patience during this time. Ultimately we are aiming to develop our service and ensure that our performance in this area is improved.

“This small inconvenience will benefit passengers in the long run by improving the performance and reliability of their train services.”

The main contractor, Babcock, will have approximately 30 staff working on a site at any one time. A 24-hour continuous shift pattern will be put in place so that work can be completed on time.

In order for the work to be carried out the line will be closed from 12pm on Saturday, November 8. The line will resume normal service on Wednesday, November 26, at 5am.

During this time the local train operator, Northern, is providing alternative road transport between the affected stations.
