A DAD-to-be who assaulted a police officer called to his home has won his freedom in time to see his child born.

Michael Furlong, 40, had been arrested after he struck the officer's left eye and cheek and after making "idle" threats to kill him. The victim had been called to the property over an allegation the defendant had attacked his partner, Burnley magistrates heard.

Furlong, of Mancknols Street, Nelson, had been convicted of assault in his absence. He was given a community order with 12 months supervision and must pay £100 compensation.

Alex Mann, prosecuting, told the court Furlong struggled with the officer, kicked out, threw out his arm and hit him.

The assault seemed to be more reckless than deliberate.

Dylan Bradshaw, defending, said the assault allegation against his partner had been thrown out when it came to court.

Mr Bradshaw added that the defendant's partner was due to give birth by elective Caesarian section in a few days and he wanted to be there.
