A MAN was left needing 12 stitches to a head wound after being attacked with an iron bar Blackburn town centre this morning.

The 20-year-old was in Higher Audley, Blackburn in the early hours when he was approached by three men as he neared the junction with Cicely Street.

The trio launched an unprovoked attack, hitting the man with what was believed to be an 18-inch metal bar.

He was knocked to the ground, where his attackers continued to kick and punch him.

They then fled the scene, possibly heading into the nearby estate.

The man was able to ring the emergency services at around 1.15am.

He was taken to hospital, where he received 12 stitches to a head wound and was also treated for bruising to his arm, leg, ribs and face.

Detective Sergeant Warren Atkinson, of Blackburn CID, said: "This was a callous and sustained attack on a lone male and it seems to have taken place without any provocation.

"The man has been left with several bumps and bruises but the cut to his head was quite serious.

"I would urge anyone with any information about this attack to come forward."

The man's attackers were described as Asian, in their late teens or early 20s.

One was wearing a dark top with the hood up; one was wearing a grey top with light coloured bottoms and their man was wearing dark coloured clothing.

Officers are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and carrying out house-house inquiries.
