A FORMER licensee at the Darwen’s Railway pub has joined the search for a missing war memorial.

The search for the plaque is being led by former soldier Pete Elvey, 68, of Hilton Road.

As we revealed this week he discovered that the plaque commemorating Darwen’s war dead was removed from the United Services Club when it was turned into a nightclub.

It was put in an outbuilding of The Railwayfor safe keeping but has since disappeared.

Chas Lloyd, licensee of the pub from 1998 to 2002, said he moved the plaque from the outhouse to under the wooden stairs in the cellar.

He said: “It was definitely still there when I had the pub.

"The plaque was made of sandstone and had names engraved in it.

"It isn’t something you would notice unless you were looking for it.

“I was going to put it up and frame it, but I never got round to it.”
