RED-faced council bosses admitted a "mix-up" after falsely declaring a popular soap star would be attending an East Lancashire festival.

Blackburn with Darwen Council displayed information on its website, stating that Malcolm Hebden, who plays busybody Norris Cole in Coronation Street, would be opening the Mill Hill Festival on Saturday, June 7.

And an officer sent a press release to various media organisations, stating that the actor would be kicking off the music and fun extravaganza at Mill Hill Gardens, where local bands will perform on stage.

The press release also contained an image of Malcolm's character, Norris, which has led to considerable media coverage of his intended appearance.

But Malcolm, who lives in Whalley, said he had stated from the outset that he could not open the festival due to having other commitments on that day.

He said: "I don't want people to turn up expecting to see me when I'm not going to be there or think I just haven't bothered like some people do."

"I never said I could be at the event on Saturday because I always knew I'd be at the Derian House Funday, signing autographs for £1 each to raise money for them.

"They're just one of the charities that I'm committed to - and a worthwhile one at that."

Ben Greenwood, marketing and publications officer for the council, said: "There has been a mix-up. Mr Hebden has a prior engagement and won't be attending the Mill Hill festival as advertised.

"The Mill Hill festival is organised by local people with support from the council.

"All the live music and the fun of the festival will go ahead and we hope everyone will join in and have a great day."

The festival will be opened on Saturday by actor David Ross, who plays Elgin Sparrow-hawk in comedy The Green Green Grass and also lives in Whalley.
