A LORRY driver has admitted his involvement in a massive money laundering operation after previously claiming the cash came from gambling and other legitimate sources.

Three-times married Andrew Akeroyd changed his plea to guilty after being cross examined by prosecuting counsel Tim Evans at his Preston Crown Court trial.

Judge Robert Brown said he understood that Akeroyd had told the usher that he was 'sick and tired of telling lies'.

During the case, the jury was told that nearly £500,000 was paid into accounts controlled by Akeroyd.

The prosecution alleged that the cash was generated by crime but 54-year-old Akeroyd denied it had come from drug activities insisting he obtained it legally.

When the case resumed today, defence counsel Jeremy Lasker said that Akeroyd had told a court usher that he did not want to continue with the trial.

He said that after discussing it with his client, Akeroyd wished to plead guilty.

Akeroyd of Kingsley Close, Blackburn, was remanded in custody to await sentence in July.
