TAX office workers in Burnley are being kept "in the dark" after a decision over their jobs was delayed, a union leader has said.

Around 70 employees based at Towneley House, Kingsway, have been told their jobs are at risk while HM Revenues and Customs conducts a review of services.

An announcement was expected yesterday but it was postponed following a message to staff via internal email.

It is believed a decision will now be delivered next week, although bosses are refusing to reveal an exact date.

Davina Gregson, Public and Commercial Services Union branch secretary, said: "We were told that the announcement would be this week and it has not happened.

"There's no reason for it to be delayed and we are being kept completely in the dark.

"It is just a further delay and we don't know what the decision's going to be.

"It is a feeling of complete hopelessness."

If the office is shut, some workers could be offered roles in Manchester or Liverpool.

A HMRC spokeswoman said a closure decision was expected next week and would be followed by three-month consultation.
