A COLNE man has pleaded guilty to throttling a woman until she fell unconscious in a field in North Yorkshire.

William Robert Davies, 60, was told by a judge that he will go to prison when he is sentenced on June 23. Davies, of no fixed address, but originally from Colne, admitted causing Pauline Townsend grievous bodily harm on January 31 this year.

He appeared at Bradford Crown Court and was remanded in custody by Judge Peter Benson. The judge told him custody was inevitable, but agreed to an application by Davies' barrister, Robin Frieze, that the case be adjourned for three weeks for a probation report.

The court heard that Davies chased Miss Townsend across a field, overpowered her and throttled her until she lost consciousness.

An appeal for witnesses was made by North Yorkshire Police in the Lancashire Telegraph after Davies was seen arguing at a bus stop with a woman.

Davies denied a more serious charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, but accepted the lesser offence on the day he was due to stand trial.
