John George Isherwood, 18, of Whitebirk Road, Blackburn was ordered to do 180 hours unpaid work when he appeared before the town's magistrates and pleaded guilty to possessing a knife in a public place.
The court heard that Isherwood produced the knife to police who stopped him in Galligreaves Way.
Clare Knight, defending, said "I would ask you to bear in mind he wasn't waving this knife around and volunteered it to the police."
