DARWEN'S top police officer is calling for a street alcohol ban throughout the town centre.
Inspector Andrea Bradbury wants an existing ban in three areas of the town to be extended across the centre and other problem areas.
The current ban, introduced in 2005, covers Darwen bus station, Shorey Bank and the Green.
It was initially introduced to focus on street drinking and did not target licensed premises.
Following the successful alcohol ban at Darwen Live, where officers could confiscate booze from people bringing it into the site and from those who were drunk, Insp Bradbury said she would like to see an all-year-round ban in the town centre.
She felt Darwen had no more or less of a problem with alcohol than other areas but having powers to confiscate open cans and bottles would help create a safer environment.
Blackburn with Darwen Council is currently looking at proposals for a boroughwide ban but this would need extensive consultation.
Insp Bradbury said: "The Darwen Live venue became a licensed premises so it was regulated and we achieved success in slowing alcohol consumption.
"Stewards were present, no drunks were served and plastic glasses used.
"All the arrests we made were outside the venue with adults and youngsters drinking."
Coun Alan Cottam said: "If anyone has any views on restricted drinking following their experience of those in place at Darwen Live, then this consultation would be an ideal opportunity to express them."
