A WORLD War Two plane will traverse the skies as a village steps back in time to the 1940s in a bid to raise money for charity.

The event, which will take place at the Rolls Royce plant in Barnoldswick, is the brainchild of Sally Lambert and Mary Brennan, of charity Bosom Friends, because they love the era.

The highlight of the day will be the RAF flight of a Dakota plane, which was used extensively by the Allies in front line operations during World War Two.

Money raised from the event, which includes a re-enactment by the West Riding Home Guard, a show of vintage vehicles and swing jive dancing exhibitions, will go to the Bosom Friends, which supports the families of people who have had cancer.

There will be stalls selling vintage clothes and people are encouraged to come dressed for the 1940s.

Ms Lambert, who is hoping to raise hundreds of pounds from the day, said they had wanted a Merlin plane because they used Rolls-Royce engines.

Ms Lambert, chairperson of the friends group, said: "We contacted the RAF and requested a plane from the Second World War for the day.

"We were hoping to get a Merlin plane and they said we could have a Dakota one.

"It is fantastic that we were able to get one for the day.

"We are all 1940s enthusiasts so this is the perfect way to combine fundraising and have fun.

"We are hoping it will be an enjoyable day for everyone involved.

"And anyone who has experience of the war and wants to share their memories should contact us."

The day, which takes place on Sunday June 29, will also include prizes for the best-dressed evacuee, civilian and military, with stalls selling war time food.

Organisers also want people to send in photos and 1940s memorabilia for an exhibition to show the part local people played during the war.

The Beer House Boys' will be entertaining from 7.30pm onwards and people will get the chance to sing along to the old songs including those by George Formby.

Tickets, costing £6 with children under 12 going in for free, are available from Mary on 01282 814917 and Sally on 01282 812796.
