A BOY will need facial surgery after being savaged by the family pet, police said.

Connor Mark Smith, 13, was attacked by the Staffordshire Bull Terrier in his house in Montgomery Grove on Saturday at 7.50pm.

The Hameldon Community College student was rushed to hospital after Meg, the family pet, bit him on the face, police said.

Connor, whose parents were at his bedside over the weekend, will need reconstructive surgery to his face.

Doctors at the Royal Preston Hospital were yesterday Sunday) deciding whether he was well enough to go home.

The dog, who is believed to have been owned by Connor's father, was destroyed by a vet.

Grandmother Loubane (CORR) Chadwick, who was not at the scene when the attack took place, said: "She was such a lovely dog. I just don't know what happened.

"The dog was owned by Connor's dad.

"His mother is at hospital with him and we don't know what is going to happen with Connor.

"As I wasn't there I am not sure what happened."

Neighbours said they saw Connor sat on the wall with his father holding his face before the ambulance arrived.

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "Connor was sat down on the wall and you could see he was bleeding.

"He had his back to me but I could see he had his hand over his face and there was blood coming out.

"His father was with him and his mother went with him in the ambulance.

"It was a shock and I just thought he might have hurt himself riding his bike down the road because the kids are always doing this"

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "The dog bit his nose I think and he is scheduled to go for surgery as soon as possible.

"I was surprised to hear about it. I know the family and just hope Connor comes out okay."

Police said the dog had been destroyed by a vet.

A police spokesperson said: "At 7.50pm on April 26 we had a call from an address in Montgomery Grove, Burnley, to say a Staffordshire Bull terrier, the pet dog of male at that address, had bit a 13-year-old.

"The 13-year-old has been taken to hospital and he will need reconstructive surgery on his face.

"The dog has been destroyed by a vet.

"The police did not attend on the night and the incident was dealt with by our communications team."
