A TALENTED teenager has won a place with a prestigious theatre group which launched the career of stars including Dame Helen Mirren.

Jo Howorth, of St John's Place, Nelson, has been invited to train with the National Youth Theatre in London after successfully completing the audition stages.

The former Walton High School pupil said she dreams of winning a part on BBC One's Dr Who She received confirmation of her acceptance onto the NYT's summer programme, just days after celebrating her 18th birthday earlier this month.

Jo said: "It's been the best birthday present ever. I never thought I'd get in so I'm still in shock.

"I've wanted to do acting since I was about eight, but I didn't do anything until I got a bit older.

"I was bullied at high school between the ages of 12 and 16.

"I love acting because it allows me to be someone else and live a different life."

The National Youth Theatre has started the careers of some of Britain's finest actors including Little Britain stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams, double Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis and current James Bond, Daniel Craig.

Sally Hayes, a company manager at the National Youth Theatre, said that the standard of auditions was always high.

She said: "We get about 4,000 applicants from all over the UK but only have 500 places.

"Competition is tough but the young people are brilliant.

"For the audition they take part in a three hour workshop and then perform their individual speaking audition.

"The workshop assesses their teamwork because it's just as important to get along with other actors as it is to be able to act."

Jo performed an extract from a play about the Pendle witches called Cold Light Singing', written by East Lancashire playwright, Yvonne Pinnington.

She will now spend two weeks in August at the National Youth Theatre, doing full-time drama training where she hopes to develop her acting career.

Jo said: "I'm not really sure what to expect but I am looking forward to it.

"It's a great opportunity to be seen by casting agents and other drama schools.

"My dream is to have a part on Dr. Who!"

Jo is hoping to raise approximately £800 to fund her trip to London and would like local businesses to sponsor her.
