HASLINGDEN'S solar-powered sculpture, right, is in the running to win a prestigious award.

The Halo - at Top O'Slate - has been shortlisted for the 2008 Structural Steel Design Awards.

The 18m diameter, circular steel sculpture will be competing against the 02 arena, Heathrow Airport's controversial terminal five and Liverpool's Kings Waterfront area.

The glowing panopticon - dubbed the flying saucer because of its likeness to a UFO - was designed by landscape architecture John Kennedy and commissioned by Mid Pennine Arts.
