Charity fundraiser Pat Monks, from Darwen, has just returned from a mission to help school children in India.

Pat, 54, took donations and gifts from the people of Blackburn and Darwen to pupils in Andhra Pradesh.

St Bartholomew's School, Ewood, donated shorts and t-shirts and other gifts included skipping ropes and teddy bears.

During the trip, Pat and five other volunteers, including another woman from Darwen, helped to secure an extension of a school and gave them a sewing machine to make children's clothing.

They also gave a sewing machine to widows in the village in order for them to make a living, and gave 50 chickens to set up a breeding programme.

A disabled group received a wheelchair and kits to make candles so they could be sold at market.

A cyclone descended on the area during the visit.

Pat said: "We thought everything would get ruined but it passed around us.

She added: "It was an amazing trip. We really feel like we have accomplished something."
