VOLUNTEER awards honouring people who make a difference to others lives will take place in May.

More than 30 individuals and groups will be recognised for their contribution to the community at the he first Pendle Community Volunteer Awards.

The awards, to be announced at Nelson Town Hall, on Wednesday, May 7, cover everything from volunteer work to environmental projects and range from young people to lifetime achievers.

The 10 categories include young achiever of the year, leader of the year and community organisation of the year.

Mayor Coun Allan Buck said: "We have lots and lots of people in Pendle who give their time freely to help others in the community.

"They often do this year in, year out without any recognition.

"So I personally want to thank them through these awards.

"This is our opportunity to recognise and appreciate the many groups and individuals who have excelled in their areas to improve our community," said Coun Buck."

All the nominees have all been invited to the presentation where the winners will presented with a trophy and framed certificate by the Mayor of Pendle in the Council Chamber.

This will be followed by a civic reception, where refreshments will be served.

Coun Buck added: "I want to pay tribute to Pendle's unsung heroes.

"We have had some outstanding entries and I will look forward to presenting the winners with their worthy rewards."
