MEMBERS of Darwen Local History Society vistited Manchester to view an ancient archeological site before their own Darwen dig.

They viewed the 2,000-year old Roman Altar' discovered by a Bolton archaeologist.

The one-metre-high gritstone column was found on March 20 by 23-year-old Sarah Duffy from Bolton who was on the Castlefield site.

The society will be working with a similar team when they proceed with their own Dig Darwen' event next year.

Working with the archeological department of Manchester University, they will dig up the former bowling green in Sunnyhurst Wood.

The site once housed cottages which formed part of a paper mill's operation.

Not much else is known about the site, near the park entrance, and the society hopes the dig will uncover some fascinating infor-mation.

A grant of £5,000 has been secured to allow the dig to go ahead next year, and it is hoped that the study will be included in a publication by the university.

Darwen Local History Society also hope that local schoolchildren will be able to use the dig as part of their history lessons.
