A BANNED driver whose lies to police meant an innocent man landed in court has been jailed for eight months.

Burnley Crown Court heard Sabar Hussain, 27, gave a false name because he was the subject of a suspended jail term.

The court was told Hussain was not honest with a probation officer preparing his pre-sentence report either.

The defendant, of Chapel Street, Brier-field, had admitted driving while dis-qualified, attempting to pervert the course of justice and driving without insurance. Judge Beverley Lunt also gave him eight points on his licence as he is still banned.

Silvia Dacre, prose-cuting, said in July, 2006, the defendant was stopped in Brierfield, was asked to produce his documents and gave the name Azhar Hussain. A fingerprint was taken.

Azhar Hussain was summonsed to attend court and told the magistrates it was not him. The fingerprint was checked and came back as Hussain's.

The prosecutor said the defendant had been given four months in prison, suspended for a year, in July 2005 and banned for three years, for his fourth offence of drink driving.

The court was told the defendant had three previous convictions for banned driving and four for not being insured.

Michael Murray, defending, said that Hussain had a good work record and was caring for his infirm parents.
