A 29-year-old man is said to be in a "serious" condition after being stamped on the head in a street brawl.

The man, who is from the Colne area, was attacked by a gang of four men near St Bartholomew Church in Albert Road, Colne, at around 2.20am on Sunday morning.

Police said the gang had been throw out of a party in the town only minutes earlier and had been fighting as they walked up through the town centre.

Police received a call from taxi company Alpine, saying one of their drivers had seen a gang attacking a man, who was left lying on the floor covered in blood, before they made off.

The man was taken to Airedale Hospital in Steeton where he had a CT scan and was said to be suffering from a fractured nose and a swollen face.

He is now out of intensive care in the hospital but his condition is still said to be serious.

Police say the attack happened after the men were throw out of a house party in Patton Street in the town after a fight broke out.

DC Martin Melvin said: "We received a call from a house in Patton Street at around 2.15am saying that there had been a disturbance.

"Five minutes later we received another call, from a taxi company reporting that a man had been attacked and was lying on the floor covered in blood.

"This was not a random assault and was not unprovoked. And although this was a vicious attack we are urging residents in Colne not to worry.

"The victim was initially taken to Airedale Hospital where he was in intensive care. He was later taken out of Intensive care and into a ward.

"He is currently heavily sedated and has swelling to the brain after receiving several kicks to the head.

"We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time of the assault."
