BOGUS callers have been preying on elderly people in Rossendale.

Three offenders approached a 79-year-old woman's house in Rawsthorne Avenue, Edenfield, between 10.45am and 11.15am on March 26.

One of the men said he was carrying out water repairs and needed to come in to switch the water off.

While the homeowner was distracted, two other men sneaked upstairs and stole bankcards and £1,010 cash.

Police believe the same group approached an 82-year-old man's house in Meadows Avenue, Haslingden, at 10.40am on March 26.

One told the pensioner he was carrying out repairs on the house next door.

He went into the house without permission, and while he distracted the pensioner, two other men sneaked upstairs.

The first man was described as Asian, about 21-30, stocky, 5ft 10in to 6ft, with short cropped hair.

He was smartly dressed with dark trousers and black shoes.

His accomplices were two white men in their twenties, one was of a broad build with short dark hair with a ginger tint and wearing dark clothing.

The other was 5ft 7in to 6ft and slim.

Crime prevention officer at Rawtenstall police, PC Phil Buck said: "I would advise everyone to use a door chain and always ask for ID if you do not know people who knock at the door.

"All too often these offenders pose as people carrying out repairs and will try to distract you while other people search your property.

"If you are in any doubt about what they say they are doing or who they are, do not let them in."
