A woman who brought rush hour traffic to a standstill by perching on the side of a motorway bridge has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Police said the woman, thought to be 36 and from Padiham, has been transferred to a mental health unit in Chorley after initially being treated at the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

On Wednesday, the woman, who has not been named, climbed over railings on the bridge which crosses the M65 at junction five, Guide, and sat with her legs dangling over the side just after 5pm.

It took two hours for police to talk her down.

In the meantime the motorway underneath the bridge was closed as traffic was diverted.

A spokesman for Lancashire Care Trust, which oversees those with mental health needs, said they could not comment on individual cases and whether the woman was at the Royal Blackburn Hospital in the hours before she forced police to close the M65.
