AN acclaimed sculptor and disability rights activist is set to unveil a new exhibition at Bury Sculpture Centre.

Lancashire-born Tony Heaton, whose works have gained national and international exposure, will open his exhibit, Altered, in Bury on March 5.

Altered will open at 2pm and run until June 25, with visitors invited to meet the artist and discuss his work.

Tony said: “I am concerned with my own experience and my interaction with both the material and non-material world.

“In my interactions, I am almost always reminded that I am perceived as a disabled person, and much of my work explores my personal analysis of these everyday interactions.

“As the artist Georg Baselitz said ‘you cannot escape your history and the trauma of your experience... can you?’”

Tony was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2013 for services to the arts and disability arts movement.

He also has an alumni award from Lancaster University and an honorary doctorate from the University of Leicester.
