Parts of Lancashire could have a white Christmas this year, according to some forecasters.

At the time of writing, The Weather Channel and BBC Weather predict snow showers across some parts of Lancashire between on the big day and the rest of the week is set to be a mixture of rain and sleet.

Here’s all you need to know about a white Christmas – including the odds of getting a flutter of the white stuff in Lancashire.

What is classed as a white Christmas?

The definition that the Met Office uses to define a white Christmas is for one snowflake to be observed falling in the 24 hours of 25 December.

When was the last white Christmas in Lancashire?

The last widespread white Christmas in the UK, parts of Lancashire included, was in 2010. It was extremely unusual, as not only was there snow on the ground at 83% of stations (the highest amount ever recorded) but snow or sleet also fell at 19% of stations.

Will Lancashire get a white Christmas?

According to The Weather Channel, there is a strong chance of Christmas day snowfall in some parts of Lancashire

In Blackburn, there is a 48 per cent chance of snowfall in Lancashire on Christmas day with temperatures expected to drop to -1 °C.

The snowy conditions are expected to continue into boxing day and bank holiday Monday and temperatures aren’t set to go any higher than 3 °C.

Tuesday 28 December-Friday 31 December is set to be a mixture of rainy conditions and sleet.

Sadly, western towns in Lancashire, such as Blackpool, aren’t set to be hit with the white stuff and The Weather Channel predict rain from next Wednesday (22 December) onwards.

While The Weather Channel is optimistic about a white Christmas in Lancashire are other forecasters as hopeful?

The Met Office’s long range forecast for the UK bewtween 21 December – 30 December predicts “unsettled” weather with the potential for snowy conditions.

They said: “Towards the middle of the period, there is an increasing chance of more unsettled and windier weather affecting the UK, with rain, and perhaps snow, possible for some places.”

However, they haven’t specified when or where this snowfall could hit.

According to the current BBC weather forecast for Blackburn with Darwen, Christmas Day is set to be a white one with light snow showers forecast.

According to the BBC forecast, sleet and snow is predicted from 1pm until 4pm.

It will change to just light snow at 5pm.

Other parts of East Lancashire, including Colne and Burnley, also have a light snow forecast on Christmas Day.

In western parts of Lancashire, such as Blackpool, BBC weather predict sleet on Christmas Day.
