A man who was banned from owning animals is thought to have bought new dogs so he can partake in badger baiting and fighting.
On Tuesday, rural task forces from the Ribble Valley and Rossendale, alongside officers from the RSPCA, executed two warrants under the Animal Welfare Act and seized two puppies that were clearly unwell and suffering as a result of alleged fighting.
Officers had received information that the puppies were returning to a house with severe injuries and on searching the property in question police found first aid equipment which they believe was used to patch-up the dogs after they returned from baiting.
A man has been arrested and will be interviewed in due course.
On Tuesday a spokesperson for the police said: "Rossendale and Clitheroe Rural Task Forces working with the RSPCA have this morning executed two warrants under the Animal Welfare Act.
"The warrants follow on from receiving community intelligence regarding a male banned from owning animals having acquired new dogs for badger baiting and fighting.
"Intelligence received stated that dogs were coming back to the property with severe injuries as a result of the illegal activities.
"Officers have this morning found an array of evidence linking the suspect to such activities and have seized several dogs at one of the addresses.
"Evidence found also includes medical equipment suspected to be used to administer first aid to the dogs upon returning with injuries.
"Two puppies have been taken to the vets after appearing unwell and the vet has confirmed that these dogs were suffering. They are now being cared for by the RSPCA.
"Enquiries are now ongoing and the suspect will be interviewed in due course."
