A would-be driver who was on the brink of sitting his test had his car seized by police after he was caught speeding.

In what officers have called an 'expensive mistake to make', the man was reported to court as he was found with no insurance and only had a provisional licence.

Late on Tuesday evening, police in Leyland spotted the wannabe licence holder travelling at 'excess speed' through the town.

The motorist was stopped and following a round of questioning officers discovered he was due to sit his test in just two days time, and therefore had no valid licence and no insurance.

A spokesperson for the police said: "Vehicle sighted excess speed in Leyland.

"Stopped and driver found to be provisional licence holder only and no insurance.

"Apparently his driving test was in two days.

"Expensive mistake to make.

"Vehicle seized and driver reported to court."
