A MOTORWAY was closed in both directions this morning after a man fell from a bridge.

Emergency crews were called to the M57 in Knowsley at about 6.25am on Sunday following reports of a concern for safety of a man on a bridge on Huyton Lane.

It was reported that the man had fallen from the bridge onto a grass verge next to the northbound carriageway of the M57.

The motorway was closed in both directions while the emergency services responded to the incident.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said the man was taken to hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life threatening at this stage.

The statement read: "We can confirm that emergency services were in attendance on the M57 today (Saturday 13 June).

"At around 6.25am we received a report of a concern for safety of a man on a motorway bridge on Huyton Lane. 

"It was reported a short time later that he had fallen from the bridge on to a grass verge next to the northbound carriageway of the M57.

"He was taken to hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life threatening at this stage. 

"Road closures in place while emergency services dealt with the incident have now been lifted."
