A MEMORIAL to the men and women who gave their lives during the world wars has been restored after it was vandalised on Saturday afternoon.

Residents were left 'disgusted' after 'a group of youths' used red spray paint to desecrate wooden panels denoting dates of the wars, as well as the metal plaque in Farnworth Park's Garden of Remembrance.

The incident was quickly reported by residents and local representatives, who immediately reported the damage to Bolton Council.

Bolton Council's Neighbourhood Services has repaired most of the damage, while the rest will be completed today.

Cllr Paul Sanders, who represents Farnworth ward, said: "Neighbourhood services and Bolton Stone have made excellent progress on removing the vandalism off the wooden panels and metal plaque.

"Also, my three-year-old daughter, Daisy, and myself have weeded and swept around three quarters of the flags surrounding the Barnes Memorial. We'll finish the rest soon."

A section of the lawns was also burnt following a bin fire on Friday night, which left damage to the brand new tarmac surrounding the Barnes Memorial.
