A SCHOOL reported a 'significant number' of positive coronavirus tests among its pupils over the weekend, resulting in pupils having to self-isolate for ten days.

Teachers at Turton School believe there is an infection moving through a Year 10 class and in Year Nine classes.

It is the first significant infection recorded at the Bromley Cross school in recent months.

It is the latest school to have told children that they will be taught remotely from home after positive coronavirus cases.

In a statement the school said: "Unfortunately we have had a significant number of positive tests come through this weekend, which indicate that there is an infection moving through 10 T-band and several year 9 classes.

"This is the first significant infection we have had in months.

"Masks will continue to be required in classrooms for a further week, then reviewed at the end of the week.

"Students in 10T to isolate for 10 days, from Friday 14th May. Students will move to remote learning at home for this period, and return to school on Tuesday 25th May.

"Students in 9T to isolate for 10 days, from Saturday 15th May. Students will move to remote learning at home for this period, and return to school on Wednesday 26th May."

Education chiefs have said schools in Bolton remain safe places to learn, with the majority of pupils still being taught in classes.

Secondary schools and colleges are being asked to keep face coverings in place until further notice following a surge in cases.

The requirement to wear them was lifted today.
