POLICE have warned people not to use their mobile phones while driving after a driver on the motorway reportedly deleted his call log when he saw officers watching him.

Officers spotted the driver holding the phone in his hand and chatting, police said.

When he was stopped by police, he reportedly tried to say he was using his sat nav and had deleted his call log.

He later admitted he had taken a call and a Traffic Offence Report was issued.

North West Motorway Police said: "This driver was spotted with a mobile phone in his hand and in conversation on the M62, laughing and chatting away.

"When he realised there was a policeman watching him, he was spotted deleting his call log and then tried to say he was using his sat nav.

"It was pointed out a phone never stops being a mobile phone, and 'hands free' doesn't mean hold a phone in your hand whilst driving.

"He finally swallowed an honesty pill and came clean, admitting the clear phone call he was on. Traffic offence report issued."
