One of Lancashire’s oldest textile mills was being taken down stone by stone to be given a new lease of life a couple of miles across Bolton as a luxury housing development in November 1992.

The former Holdsworth Brothers’ China Lane mill, off Higher Bridge Street, was built in 1820 but spinning had taken place on the site since the 1700s.

Owners blamed the flood of cheap textile imports for the mill’s closure in April 1990.
