THE fiancé of a cancer survivor is set to reveal their most annoying habits on national television.

Daniel Anders and his fiancé Adam Holmes, are the subject of a touching short film to be broadcast at 7.55pm on Channel 4 tonight ahead of the first episode of 'The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer".

The film sees the couple join other people from across the UK in laying bare their loved-ones’ most irritating faults – all in support of the joint fundraising campaign from Cancer Research UK and Channel 4.

Adam, who was brought up in Lostock, and is a former pupil of Canon Slade School, is irritated by Daniel’s insistence on using correctly branded recyclable bags in supermarkets and being a nervous car passenger.

The light-hearted look at the annoyances and frustrations that arise in a relationship is something everyone can relate to – especially during lockdown.

But the film packs a powerful punch when it is revealed the targets of the venting are each cancer survivors and so, ultimately, their nearest and dearest will forgive them anything.

The message in this heart-warming film is clear – cancer can put everything into perspective.

Adam and Daniel know this all too well as Daniel was diagnosed with cancer when he was aged just 23.

The couple were filmed to help shine a light on the progress in research that is helping to improve cancer survival.

The story culminates with the final punchline that, with the public’s help, more people like Daniel can “keep on being annoying for longer”.

Daniel, from Wigan, was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2012.

He had just finished training to be an events manager when he found a lump on his neck.

He had four rounds of chemotherapy and two weeks of radiotherapy treatment. Daniel, who lost both his grandparents to cancer, made a good recovery. He was given the all-clear in 2013.

The couple, who have been together for 11 years and now live in Salford Quays, had planned to marry this year, but have had to postpone until 2022 due to Covid.

Daniel, aged 32, said: “Being diagnosed with cancer when I was young was a huge shock, but I am fortunate that the treatment was so effective and I am here now to tell the tale and share my life with Adam.”

In the north west, around 42.000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year.

As the Bake Off tent opens its doors in aid of Stand Up To Cancer once more, Daniel and Adam hope their story will inspire people across the region to get behind the fundraising effort.

Adam, aged 30, works as an electronical engineer for Siemens.

He said: “Lockdown has made every couple in the country irritate one another and we are no exception!

"But I am so proud of Daniel and his courage in overcoming cancer and getting on with his life.”

Stand Up To Cancer aims to get new tests and treatments to people who need them faster.

Since its launch in 2012, the campaign has raised more than £62m to fund 55 clinical trials and research projects.

Foodies and fundraisers alike can support this vital work by downloading a free Stand Up To Cancer Bake Off kit full of tips, recipes and Covid-safe ideas on how to raise some much kneaded dough this spring, such as staging an at home technical challenge.

Whether they’ve taken up baking in lockdown or their culinary creations are already hand-shake worthy, fans can also support the cause with striking new Star Baker-themed merchandise available to buy from su2c.org.uk/shop or Next.co.uk.

Cancer Research UK spokeswoman for the North West, Jane Bullock, said: “We’re grateful to Daniel and Adam for helping to raise vital awareness.

"Cancer can affect anyone’s life, at any time, so we only have one option: accelerate life-saving research.

“In the UK 1 in 2 people who get cancer survive their disease for 10 years or more.

"With the help of people across the region, Stand Up To Cancer hopes to increase cancer survival to 3 in 4 by 2034.

“That’s why we’re asking everyone to help whip up some cash as ‘The Great Celebrity Bake Off’ returns.

"Whether they donate, fundraise or buy our Star Baker range, they will be helping to fund incredible scientists and save lives.”
