THE large chimney in the background might give you a clue as to where this is.
Taken around 1910, this is a photograph of Spring Vale Station at Darwen and the largest chimney you can see is that of India Mill.
Originally called Sough Station when it opened in 1847, it became known as Spring Vale in 1877. Initially the station served as a terminus for the Blackburn-Bolton line until the Sough Tunnel opened.
The station continued in operation until 1958.
It looks as though this picture was taken from one of the signals leading into the station with the photographer standing on a platform similar to the one you can see the signalman on high above the tracks.
