Union Street, Accrington, 1966
IT’S a photo of a virtually deserted street but we can almost guarantee that for anyone who grew up in Accrington in the Sixties and Seventies this will bring back a lot of memories.
This was Union Street in the town centre in 1966 and in the centre of the photo is The Astronaut which was a favourite meeting point. Next to the end of that block of shops was actually a Tesco supermarket with the town hall in the background.
The two entrances either side of the bench on the left were to the town centre car park which would later be replaced by the Arndale Centre.
